Inspired by Psalm 102

Inspired by Psalm 102, this quiet scene captures real, bruised faith—a reminder that even in silence and suffering, God still sees, hears, and is near.

Scene: Hospital Waiting Room – dimly lit, quiet, vending machine humming softly in the background. Liam sits hunched, elbows on knees, staring at the floor. Jordan walks in holding two coffees and settles beside him.

Jordan: You look like you’re holding the whole world on your back.

Liam: Feels about right. Some days it’s like I’m not even here—just drifting. The pain, the waiting… it wears you down.

Jordan (hands him a coffee): I know. I’ve been there. When my mom was sick, I practically lived in this room. You start to think your prayers are just echoes in a locked room.

Liam: Exactly. I’ve cried and begged… but it’s like Heaven’s shut tight. My strength is gone. I feel like ash—used up.

Jordan (leans back, sips): I remember whispering to God, “Do You even see me?” And somehow, never loud, never flashy, peace would come. Not all at once, but He showed up, usually through people, through moments like this.

Liam: I want to believe that. I do. But everything hurts. I look around and wonder why everyone else seems to get miracles.

Jordan: You’re not alone in that. Maybe the miracle isn’t the fix—it’s the fact that you’re still here. Still hoping and still talking to Him. That’s faith, Liam. Not the shiny kind—real, bruised, enduring faith.

Liam (quietly): You think He still sees me?

Jordan (nods): I know He does. He saw you long before you ended up here. And He’s not walking away. Neither am I.

Liam (eyes glassy, voice soft): Then I’ll keep whispering. Even if it’s all I’ve got left.

Jordan: That’s more than enough. Mercy listens, even when the world doesn’t.

Even when prayers feel like echoes, mercy is still listening.

Psalm 102

Affliction in Light of Eternity

A prayer of an afflicted person who is weak and pours out his lament before the Lord.

1 Lord, hear my prayer;
let my cry for help come before You.
2 Do not hide Your face from me in my day of trouble.
Listen closely to me;
answer me quickly when I call.

3 For my days vanish like smoke,
and my bones burn like a furnace.
4 My heart is afflicted, withered like grass;
I even forget to eat my food.
5 Because of the sound of my groaning,
my flesh sticks to my bones.
6 I am like a desert owl,[a]
like an owl among the ruins.
7 I stay awake;
I am like a solitary bird on a roof.
8 My enemies taunt me all day long;
they ridicule and curse me.
9 I eat ashes like bread
and mingle my drinks with tears
10 because of Your indignation and wrath;
for You have picked me up and thrown me aside.
11 My days are like a lengthening shadow,
and I wither away like grass.

12 But You, Lord, are enthroned forever;
Your fame endures to all generations.
13 You will rise up and have compassion on Zion,
for it is time to show favor to her—
the appointed time has come.
14 For Your servants take delight in its stones
and favor its dust.

15 Then the nations will fear the name of Yahweh,
and all the kings of the earth Your glory,
16 for the Lord will rebuild Zion;
He will appear in His glory.
17 He will pay attention to the prayer of the destitute
and will not despise their prayer.

18 This will be written for a later generation,
and a newly created people will praise the Lord:
19 He looked down from His holy heights—
the Lord gazed out from heaven to earth—
20 to hear a prisoner’s groaning,
to set free those condemned to die,[b]
21 so that they might declare
the name of Yahweh in Zion
and His praise in Jerusalem,
22 when peoples and kingdoms are assembled
to serve the Lord.

23 He has broken my[c] strength in midcourse;
He has shortened my days.
24 I say: “My God, do not take me
in the middle of my life![d]
Your years continue through all generations.
25 Long ago You established the earth,
and the heavens are the work of Your hands.
26 They will perish, but You will endure;
all of them will wear out like clothing.
You will change them like a garment,
and they will pass away.
27 But You are the same,
and Your years will never end.
28 Your servants’ children will dwell securely,
and their offspring will be established before You.”

New Living Translation

Psalm 102

A prayer of one overwhelmed with trouble, pouring out problems before the Lord.

1 Lord, hear my prayer!
    Listen to my plea!
2 Don’t turn away from me
    in my time of distress.
Bend down to listen,
    and answer me quickly when I call to you.
3 For my days disappear like smoke,
    and my bones burn like red-hot coals.
4 My heart is sick, withered like grass,
    and I have lost my appetite.
5 Because of my groaning,
    I am reduced to skin and bones.
6 I am like an owl in the desert,
    like a little owl in a far-off wilderness.
7 I lie awake,
    lonely as a solitary bird on the roof.
8 My enemies taunt me day after day.
    They mock and curse me.
9 I eat ashes for food.
    My tears run down into my drink
10 because of your anger and wrath.
    For you have picked me up and thrown me out.
11 My life passes as swiftly as the evening shadows.
    I am withering away like grass.

12 But you, O Lord, will sit on your throne forever.
    Your fame will endure to every generation.
13 You will arise and have mercy on Jerusalem[a]—
    and now is the time to pity her,
    now is the time you promised to help.
14 For your people love every stone in her walls
    and cherish even the dust in her streets.
15 Then the nations will tremble before the Lord.
    The kings of the earth will tremble before his glory.
16 For the Lord will rebuild Jerusalem.
    He will appear in his glory.
17 He will listen to the prayers of the destitute.
    He will not reject their pleas.

18 Let this be recorded for future generations,
    so that a people not yet born will praise the Lord.
19 Tell them the Lord looked down
    from his heavenly sanctuary.
He looked down to earth from heaven
20     to hear the groans of the prisoners,
    to release those condemned to die.
21 And so the Lord’s fame will be celebrated in Zion,
    his praises in Jerusalem,
22 when multitudes gather together
    and kingdoms come to worship the Lord.

23 He broke my strength in midlife,
    cutting short my days.
24 But I cried to him, “O my God, who lives forever,
    don’t take my life while I am so young!
25 Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth
    and made the heavens with your hands.
26 They will perish, but you remain forever;
    they will wear out like old clothing.
You will change them like a garment
    and discard them.
27 But you are always the same;
    you will live forever.
28 The children of your people
    will live in security.
Their children’s children
    will thrive in your presence.”
