Inspired by Song of Solomon 1:7-13 – A Conversation on Choosing the Shepherd’s Pasture

Inspired by Song of Solomon 1:7-13, this conversation explores how true rest and identity are found by following the Shepherd’s footprints, rejecting counterfeit voices, and dwelling in His fragrant presence.

Scene:
Late-evening campfire softly burning at a weekend retreat. Soft guitar music drifts from a nearby cabin while two friends, Jordan and Elise, warm their hands around ceramic mugs.

Jordan:
During the quiet time today, that theme kept echoing: Stop chasing every voice. Ask the Shepherd where He’s feeding the flock. I’ve been grazing on a dozen podcasts and still feel empty.

Elise:
I know the feeling. It’s like we wander through knock-off pastures and then wonder why our souls stay hungry. The passage reminds us—follow the worn paths of Scripture, stay near trustworthy guides.

Jordan:
Exactly. And it said the Beloved calls the seeker beautiful—not because of perfect performance, but because grace has already done the adorning.

Elise:
That line about cheeks framed with ornaments and a neck encircled with cords? It struck me. Jewelry can’t add worth; it just highlights the beauty God already placed there.

Jordan:
Then there’s the picture of the King reclining at the table and worship rising like spikenard. Made me ask: do I reserve my best fragrance—my attention, my energy—for Him?

Elise:
And the myrrh that rests on the heart all night. That’s sacrificial love, staying close even in the dark—reminding us His presence doesn’t clock out when the lights go off.

Jordan:
My favorite image was the cluster of henna blossoms at En-gedi—fragrance and life right in the middle of the desert. That’s what Jesus is: an oasis you don’t expect, shelter you can breathe in.

Elise:
So the takeaway? Stop grazing everywhere else, follow His footprints, sit close long enough for His scent to linger, and let identity form in that nearness—not from the noise.

Jordan:
Yeah. No counterfeit shepherds, no bargain perfumes. Just Him. That’s where devotion—and rest—finally meet.

When the heart chooses the Shepherd’s pasture, beauty, fragrance, and rest replace the barren noise of every counterfeit field. Remember the 23rd Psalm? Verse 2, “He lets me lie down in green pastures…” Not brown pastures, not rocky pastures, not barren pastures, but green pastures.

God’s Word…

Holman Christian Standard Bible

Tell me, you, the one I love:
Where do you pasture your sheep?
Where do you let them rest at noon?
Why should I be like one who veils herself
beside the flocks of your companions?

 If you do not know,
most beautiful of women,
follow the tracks of the flock,
and pasture your young goats
near the shepherds’ tents.

I compare you, my darling,
to a mare among Pharaoh’s chariots.
10 Your cheeks are beautiful with jewelry,
your neck with its necklace.
11 We will make gold jewelry for you,
accented with silver.

12 W While the king is on his couch,
my perfume releases its fragrance.
13 My love is a sachet of myrrh to me,
spending the night between my breasts.

-Song of Solomon 1:7-13(HCSB)
